Wales are leading the way and we are here to help.

What is the new law?

Wales are leading the way with workplace recycling and as of April 6th 2024, the Welsh governments new ‘Workplace Recycling’ Law comes into effect.

The introduction of the new law means that all businesses, charities and public sectors will legally be required to segregate and sort their waste for recycling; Something which we, at Orwak Easi UK Ltd, have been passionate about for a very long time.
The law will also apply to waste and recycling collectors and processors too.

The Welsh Government aims to improve the quality and quantity of recycling from workplaces in a step towards reducing carbon emissions, zero waste and tackling climate change.

And we are here to help. As a business we are in the favourable position of being able to offer a number of perfect solutions for your workplace to help you implement the new requirements.

We will get to the part where we can help but here is a rough guide on the new law and what it means for businesses in Wales going forward.

What waste will companies have to segregate?

In short, companies will have to segregate and sort all their waste and have it collected separately. Broken down they will have to separate the following:

– Food
– Paper and Card (these can be mixed)
– Glass
– Metal, plastic and cartons (these can be mixed)
– Unsold textiles
– Unsold small electrical and electronic items (sWEEE)

The law will also ban the following:

– Sending any amount of food waste to sewer
– Separately collected waste going to landfill or incineration
– All wood waste going to landfill

We have used the phrase ‘segregate at source’ across many campaigns and stories and this will be key to easing into new processes.

Who does the law apply to?

It applies to all businesses from April 6th 2024, with the exception of the NHS and private hospitals who have a further 2 years to get on board. These business include, but are not limited to the following:

• Agricultural premises
• Hospitality and tourism – restaurants, bars, pubs, bed and breakfasts, hotels, campsites and caravan parks, holiday accommodation, and licensed premises
• Showgrounds
• Service stations and petrol stations
• Entertainment and sports venues including leisure centres.
• Transport – bus stations, railway stations, seaports, airports, and heliports
• Care and nursing homes
• Pharmacies, GP surgeries, dental surgeries, and other primary care settings
• Construction sites
• Factories and warehouses
• Car garages
• Education – universities, colleges, and schools
• Garden centres
• Heritage buildings
• Libraries and museums
• Offices and workshops
• Places of worship
• Prisons
• Outdoor markets and festivals
• Retail

How will the new law look in the workplace?

The days of just putting rubbish in the bin will be long gone.

You may already be ahead of some businesses and already be recycling cardboard and more and that is fantastic.

But going forward you will have to have designated areas, bins, waste containers, compactors or balers for each individual waste stream.

Your bin situation could go from this to this

For bigger companies who produce more waste, it could take up a lot of space, a lot of time and cost a lot of money. You may have to increase skips or waste containers to cope.

But we still believe segregating at source is key. I.e a mini recycling station in high footfall areas like the kitchen. And we are experts in saving customers time, space and money and helping improve their recycling processes.

So, how can we help get your business ready?

We are quite unique but that also means we are well equipped to help you.

We not only sell compactors and balers but also bins, waste containers and underground systems and that means we can mix it up and provide you with a solution that works for you.

Whether it is a range of different coloured bins/ lids, clearly labelled for easy segregation like the set up below:

Or a new recycling systems using one of our multi chambered balers like the set up below:

For waste collectors and processors we have often implemented a full range of large scale equipment like this set up below:

Or a mixture of everything.

What we are saying is one solution does not fit all and we can make sure everything is right for your business.

We have over 50 years experience in helping customers with their waste and recycling processes and a reputation for implementing what the customer wants and needs over what we need to sell.

As mentioned before, we have long been believers that segregating at source is key and we have been very successful in helping our customers achieve their environmental goals.
