Be Prepared; Make Waste Management Changes Now – New Waste Legislation March 2025

It’s time to be prepared for the 31st March 2025 and make waste management changes now, before the new laws relating to dry recycling and food waste come into effect in England.But what are the new laws? How do they affect your business? What should you do now?
We will try break it down for you and show you how we can help you be prepared.
What is the new legislation?
In a bid to drastically improve recycling across England (new laws are already in place in Scotland and Wales) the new legislation states the following;
Food Waste – all non-household municipal premises, with 10 or more full time employees, must arrange for food waste to be segregated and collected for recycling. Councils are responsible for arranging food waste collections for households.
Dry recycling – all dry recyclable material i.e cardboard, papers, glass, tin etc must be segregated and collected for recycling.
This is the bare bones of the new laws. You can read the full statement here>> https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/consistency-in-household-and-business-recycling-in-england/outcome/government-response
Who does it apply to?
All business including schools, healthcare settings and public sectors with over 10 full time employees will be required to implement the new legislation.
Micro businesses are excluded.
The frequency of waste collections will be left to businesses to decide.
How can you prepare?
Start by looking at your current procedures. What do you currently do? How is it collected/stored?
You might find that you already segregate the dry recycling and the only thing you need to concentrate on is the food waste. Or maybe you need to look at both.
The key is to start now.
Start by deciding how you are going to segregate food and dry recycling from your current waste. Do you need new bins? Caddies? Balers?
How are you going to implement these new procedures? Do staff need training?
And, lastly, you need to look at who will collect your food or recyclable waste. Will your current provider assist you? Do you need to look for cheaper or more efficient collections?
How are we preparing?
We are in a very advantageous position. As a company we provide a whole range of solutions that we have to hand and to help us.
So, our plan is to have food caddies in all kitchens for food waste. We will then transfer this to a larger 140ltr wheelie bin with a food lid. That way we can store the food waste for longer and look at fortnightly collections.
We will also have separate bins for all dry recyclable waste.
We are also in talks with local waste collection firms to agree a deal on the collection of the food waste, as this is something new to us too.
You can view our range of bins and caddies here>> https://sulo.co.uk/contact/
As always, all our cardboard is baled on site in one of our balers.
You can check out our balers here>> https://www.orwakeasi.co.uk/
How can we help?
We can help in a number of ways.
We are a unique company who specialise in waste and recycling equipment from bins and balers to full underground refuse systems.
Therefore, we have a number of solutions to suit your needs.
For example, if you need bins and food caddies to help you segregate at source then we have the solution.
Or, if you produce lots of card, plastic, pots or cartons then maybe a baler is the solution you need.

The products we recommend are they following;
- Bins to help segregate your waste. The size is dependent on the amount of waste you produce. We have a full range available and to make it more cost effective we recommend changing the colours of the lids over the full bin.
- An Orwak Flex 5030 compactor for compacting your waste 10:1. With an Orwak compactor you can store more waste and for more in your bins for collections. These work great for general waste, food waste and recyclables too.
- Food caddies, or pre-sorting bins. These come in a range of sizes but are ideal for placing at source. I.E in kitchens etc.
- Underground bins are a bit of a wild card here but if you are a large business or in a complex where waste bins are shared then an underground system us something to consider.
